Is Your Dream Bigger Than Your Pain?
Imagine being 16 years old and looking for your name on the varsity basketball roster. You look down the list, hoping to see your name, but it is not there.
That is what happened to Michael Jordan. He went home, cried, and felt the pain of being told he was not good enough. But instead of letting that moment decide who he would become, he made a different choice.
He decided his dream was bigger than his pain.
That decision did not erase what happened to him. It changed what he chose to do with it. His disappointment became fuel for something bigger, and that dream helped shape the person he would become.
I wish I had understood that sooner in my own life.
As a young divorced mother, I believed I had every reason to be angry. My marriage had ended, my ex-husband had remarried, and I did not feel that he was supporting our children in the way I believed he should.
For years, I carried that anger with me.
I told myself that my anger was protecting me. I thought holding onto what had happened would somehow make things feel more fair. But the truth was different.
My anger was not protecting me. It was keeping me stuck in a story I had already lived.
I could not change what had happened. I could not change the choices other people had made. What I could change was what I believed about myself and what I decided to do with the life I still had in front of me.
Everything began to change when I found a dream that gave my life a new sense of purpose.
That dream eventually became The Invisible Rule.
Through that work, I began to understand something that changed the way I saw my own life. We are not defined by everything that happens to us.
We are shaped by the beliefs we choose to keep.
Sometimes life gives us experiences that hurt deeply. We may experience divorce, rejection, disappointment, failure, loss, or a season when nothing seems to be going the way we hoped.
Those experiences are real, and your pain is real too.
But there comes a time when you have to ask yourself a different question. Instead of asking, "Why did this happen to me?" you may need to ask, "What do I want to create from here?"
That is where your dream matters.
A dream gives your mind something new to move toward. When you have something meaningful to work for, your thoughts have a place to go besides the pain, fear, anger, and regret that may have been taking up so much space.
Your dream does not have to be enormous.
It may be a healthier relationship with yourself. It may be building a business, becoming a better parent, finding work that matters to you, or simply waking up each morning feeling like your life belongs to you again.
What matters is that the dream is yours.
When you begin to believe that something better is possible, you start to see choices you could not see before. You begin to notice the beliefs that have been guiding your decisions, often without you even realizing they were there.
This is where your Invisible Rule may be hiding.
An Invisible Rule is a belief you have accepted about yourself, your life, or what is possible for you. It can sound like, "This is just who I am," "I am too old," "I always fail," "People like me do not get ahead," or "I have to live with what happened."
The problem is that we often treat these beliefs as facts.
They may feel true because we have carried them for so long. But a belief that has shaped your life does not have to control the rest of your life.
You can question it.
You can choose a different belief.
And you can begin creating a different future.
I know what it feels like to spend years looking backward at something you cannot change. I also know what can happen when you finally turn your attention toward something that gives you purpose.
Your past may be part of your story, but it does not have to be the ending.
So I want you to ask yourself something today.
Is your dream bigger than your pain?
And if your answer is no, I want you to be curious about why.
What pain are you still carrying? What belief did you create because of that pain? And what might become possible if you stopped allowing that belief to decide what comes next?
You do not have to have everything figured out today.
You only need to become willing to imagine that your life can be different.
Then take one small step toward that possibility.
Your dream may be waiting on the other side of an Invisible Rule you have believed for far too long.
